Two wildfires that erupted Tuesday July 27, 2010 and spread quickly in Southern California have destroyed dozens of homes including this house about five miles above Highline Road in Tehachapi and forced evacuations in remote areas of the state's Kern County. More than 30 homes were lost in the small hill community of Old West Ranch and another 150 structures were threatened, firefighters said Tuesday. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency Tuesday night in Kern County as a result of the "Bull Fire" in the Kernville area and the "West Fire" near Tehachapi. The fires have burned more than 15,000 acres combined, according to the governor's office. An estimated 30 to 40 homes were destroyed and an evacuation was undertaken for a wildfire that broke out Tuesday afternoon in the Old West Ranch community south of Tehachapi. The "West Fire" grew to hundreds of acres and was threatening about 150 additional homes near Blackburn Canyon Road. Kern County Fire Department Engineer Anthony Romero said the fire spread quickly. "The wind has been a big factor. It's changing on us a lot," Romero told The Associated Press. "Now it's blowing from the southeast, going over a couple of ridges." An evacuation center was established at the old Jacobsen Jr. High on South Snyder in Tehachapi. This is the second wildfire to erupt this week in Kern County. The "Bull Fire" broke out Monday in the Kernville area and had grown to thousands of acres by Tuesday evening. It destroyed six homes and also forced evacuations. The causes of both fires are unknown. See also photos from this week's "Bull Fire" in the Kern River Valley. |
