Free Fishing Weekend offers opportunities across Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon waives all recreational fishing license requirements on two days in June and hosts special events offering gear, bait and instruction to people new to fishing.

Free Fishing Weekend events are planned for Saturday, June 9, at Alton Baker Canoe Canal in Eugene; St. Louis Ponds near Gervais; and Olalla Reservoir northeast of Toledo.

“This is a unique opportunity for new anglers to experience some great fishing right in their own back yard,” said Shannon Richardson, ODFW biologist.

The canoe canal in Eugene is stocked throughout the summer and into fall, providing easy access and plenty of opportunity to families who want to practice their new fishing skills on their own.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will provide gear and bait to people who need it, and volunteer instructors will be available to offer tips to improving your fishing skills.

In addition, in recognition of Free Fishing Weekend, ODFW will have additional activities available for young anglers and their families, including fly casting and knot tying clinics.

Anglers can also take to the water Sunday without buying a fishing license.
