Sportsmen's show a big hit for Douglas County
ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Hundreds of people packed the fairgrounds this weekend for the annual Sportsmen and Outdoor Show.
People were able to see the latest in hunting, fishing and outdoor equipment.
Returning again this year were Hollywood animal trainers who brought lions, a wolverine and even a monkey.
Organizers hope people at the show can learn more about wildlife. "We already know that hunters and fishermen definitely appreciate wildlife," said animal trainer/educator Jeff Lee. "In fact, they go to great lengths to preserve areas where wildlife can flourish, but we bring stuff that's not just from North America."
Levi the monkey, who appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean, was also in attendance. Kids and adults looked on in amazement as they learned about how trainers work with the animals and get them trained for movies.
Lee says he really enjoys the education part of his job. "People get the opportunity to see just how smart these guys are and they are amazed by it. That is a part, I think, of the appeal," said Lee. "We couldn't do what we do if they were just dumb animals."
The show allowed vendors from around the west coast to sell their items and services.
There were also a lot of hands on activities for kids.
People who attended the show also received a discount with a canned food donation which was given to UCAN.
