On Columbus Day in 1962 (Oct. 12), a severe windstorm with gusts of more than 100 mph moved inland from the Pacific Ocean and caused severe damage in the Willamette Valley, including Oregon State University, where 55 trees were destroyed and another 43 were damaged - including this one outside the Memorial Union.
