EUGENE, Ore. - The changing of the guard - and venues - continues Thursday with the announcement of a new University of Oregon athletic director.

The University of Oregon hired Rob Mullens from Kentucky to take over as director of intercollegiate athletics.

University President Richard Lariviere announced the move Thursday, saying Mullens brings a "deep reservoir of experience."

The 41-year-old Mullens arrives from Kentucky, where he was the Wildcats' deputy director of athletics.

Oregon has been looking for an athletic director since March, when Mike Bellotti resigned to accept a job with ESPN.

Bellotti' announced his departure amid upheaval in the athletic department, including legal problems for several football players and the firing of longtime head basketball coach Ernie Kent.

Mullens has a degree in business administration. He arrives in Eugene at a time when the Ducks are preparing to open a new $227 million basketball arena.

Now gone from the UO: Dave Frohnmayer, Mike Bellotti, Ernie Kent and Bev Smith.

New leadership includes Richard Lariviere, Chip Kelly, Dana Altman and Paul Westhead - not to mention the return of Oregon baseball, PK Park, the new Matthew Knight Arena, the Jaqua Center and improvements to Autzen Stadium, all part of the largest building boom in the University's history.
