Andrew Moore has strong outing in NCAA debut

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – For the second consecutive game, the sixth-ranked Oregon State baseball team sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs in an inning. On Sunday, those six runs came in the first and help support first-time starter Andrew Moore in the Beavers’ 14-3 win over UC Riverside at Palm Springs Stadium.

The Beavers finished with just four hits in the inning but also took advantage of three walks amongst the team’s first four batters en route to the early advantage. OSU also tacked on runs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The game was called after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

The win pushed Oregon State to 3-0 for the 34th time in school history and the first time since the 2007 campaign. UC Riverside, meanwhile, fell to 1-2 on the season.

Moore took advantage of the support for his first career win in his first collegiate appearance. The right-hander worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs and four hits while striking out six. He was dinged for three runs in the fourth but otherwise held UC Riverside batters off balance.

Oregon State finished with 12 hits overall. UC Riverside, meanwhile, finished with four. Zack Reser worked 1 2/3 innings of relief and allowed just one walk in 12 pitches.

Andy Peterson became the first Beaver with three hits this season and led Oregon State in that category. Dylan Davis and Joey Matthews each had two hits apiece as well before being replaced in the sixth inning.

Davis drove in three, highlighted by a two-run triple in the fourth. Jake Rodriguez, Tyler Smith and Jerad Casper all had two RBI as well.

UCR starter Ben Doucette failed to make it out of the first inning, throwing 40 pitches to nine OSU batters. He allowed six runs and four hits and issued three walks. He took the loss and is 0-1 on the year.

Oregon State concludes action in Palm Springs with an 8:30 a.m. PT game against UC Riverside on Monday. The game can be heard live on the Beaver Sports Radio Network and Beaver Nation Online (osubeavers.com).
