Gardner, Greer named athletes of the week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- The Pac-12 Conference outdoor track and field athlete of the week honors for the week of April 15-21, 2013:

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week: ELIJAH GREER, OREGON (Sr., Lake Oswego, Ore.). Elijah Greer won the 800 meters in a nation-leading 1:46.20 during the Oregon-Arkansas dual meet. It was the fastest 800 meters ever run during a dual meet, according to Track & Field News. Greer was the event champion at the 2012 Pac-12 Championships and an All-American at that distance last year, as well.

Women’s Track Athlete of the Week: ENGLISH GARDNER, OREGON (Sr., Voorhees, N.J.). English Gardner turned in the fastest women’s 100 meters in the world this season on Saturday at the Mt. SAC Relays, beating a field of elite professionals by finishing in 11.00, with a legal tailwind of plus-1.8 meters per second. Not only was that the fastest time of 2013, but also a school record, No. 2 all-time in Pac-12 history and No. 6 all-time in NCAA history. Gardner broke her own school mark, 11.03, set in 2011. She also ran on the 4x100 relay team that finished fourth at the Mt. SAC Relays in a season-best 43.82, the third-fastest relay in school history.

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week: HAMMED SULEMAN, CALIFORNIA (RS-Jr., Antioch, Calif.). Hammed Suleman won both the long jump and triple jump over the weekend to help the California men’s team defeat Stanford in the Big Meet, the Bears’ first win in the series since 2006. He captured the long jump with a distance of 24-2.25w, then clinched Cal’s victory with a win in the triple jump (51-3.75) – then next-to-last event of the competition. His mark in the triple jump ranks him in the top 20 in the country this season.

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week: BRIANNA BAIN, STANFORD (So., Beaverton, Ore.). Competing in just her second meet of the season, Brianna Bain broke her own school record in the javelin with a toss of 183-10, setting a Big Meet record while sparking the Cardinal women to a 102-61 dual-meet victory over California. The distance broke the school mark of 180-2 she set last season, and Summer Pierson’s Big Meet record of 175-0 from 1998. The throw is the longest by a collegian this year and the second-longest by an American. She is the 2012 Pac-12 and NCAA Champion in the event.
