EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon first baseman Ryon Healy and closer Jimmie Sherfy have been named to the 60-man Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list, USA Baseball announced on Thursday.
Sherfy, a 2012 All-American and finalist for the Stopper of the Year Award, was also on the award’s preseason watch list. He is the active career leader in strikeouts per nine innings with more than 13 Ks per nine innings, while also ranking fourth on the active career saves list with 33. The right-hander entered the week second in saves during the 2013 season with 14, while boasting a 2-0 record with a 0.90 ERA.
The Golden Spikes Award is the third watch list Sherfy has been named to in the last three weeks. He is also on the NCBWA Stopper of the Year midseason watch list and the Pitcher of the Year watch list.
Healy, a two-time Pac-12 Player of the Week this season, is a new addition to the award’s watch list. He ranks in the top 52 in the nation in four separate categories – home runs, home runs per game, RBI and total bases. Healy enters the Washington State series this weekend batting .349 with nine home runs and 45 RBI. He leads the Ducks in batting average, home runs, RBI, doubles (15), total bases (103) and slugging percentage (.589).
