Duck Football: Thomas hits practice field as #1 QB
By KVAL SportsDarron Thomas was grinning ear to ear as he took to the practice field Saturday morning for Oregon's first practice in preparation for the New Mexico Lobos. Chip Kelly refused to give a detailed explanation for the decision, saying he could only pick one guy. Thomas was his best choice. As for fifth year senior Nate Costa, he knows he better be ready to play based upon how quarterbacks in the Pac-10 have been unable to last a full season. Costa will be the backup and also continue to be the holder on field goals and extra points. Other position battles were decided before Saturday morning. Starting opposite RCB Talmadge Jackson III will be junior Anthony Gildon as the leftside cornerback. Secondary coach John Neal said he will likely go with a six-man rotation at corner and four guys at safety. Redshirt freshman QB Daryle Hawkins, who impressed all fall, will lineup at slot receiver and running back against the Lobos. Senior Remene Alston is still listed as the backup to Kenjon Barner, but Alston is still trying to come back from a foot injury and could not make it through all of Saturday's practice. Recall, LaMichael James will serve his one-game suspension in the season opener for his offseason misdemeanor harassment conviction. In the competition to start at strongside linebacker, Josh Kaddu will get the start over Boseko Lokombo. Next Saturday's kickoff is set for 12:30 at Autzen Stadium.
