Young athletes make big goals on the soccer field
By Erica Rush, KCBY NewsNORTH BEND, Ore. -It takes more than just headers and goals for soccer players to get ahead and reach their goals as collegiate contenders. And for two select North Bend athletes, it's about playing against the best, in U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program. Most days after school, you can find these two sixths graders out of North Bend Jr. High practicing their skills on the soccer field. During Spring Break, they were selected to play for the State ODP Team, which builds players up for the top Regional and National soccer competition. But according to Emma Powley and Ian Bream, just because you make the squad doesn't mean you can stay. Each practice is a tryout and you're competing against the best. "It's a fun experience, you just have as much fun as you can and then maybe they might pick you but if they dont, you just keep on trying," said Powley. "You have to want it though to get on the team," added Bream. But the two say they're not just fighting for a position on this squad, they both have goals of playing beyond high school. According to Powley, "I want to play on the Washington Freedom, in the WPS. It's a team that Mia Hamm started and people all around the world come here just to play soccer." "Then I want to go to England and play for Manchester United," said Bream. "I've been growing up watching them and my dad is from England." As for the upcoming ODP games, the two are selling $5 raffle tickets to help pay for uniforms and travel expenses, that could win you a $100 self-serve gas card.
