4A Boys State Championship: Cottage Grove comes up short with Phoenix

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Alex Hobson had 18 points and Phoenix won its first state championship with a 59-44 victory over Cottage Grove in the OSAA Class 4A boys basketball final at Gill Coliseum.

Alex Young had 15 points and six assists and Tyler Dungannon added 12 points for the Pirates (23-6).

Shane Maddess had 15 points for Cottage Grove (24-4), which hadn't played for a state title since it won the Class 3A tournament in 1991.

Dustin Hurd added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions, who trailed by as many as 17 points.

Phoenix had gone to the state championship game just once before, when it finished as runner up in Class 3A in 1992. Last season Phoenix fell to La Grande in the semifinals and finished in fifth place.

Young's 3-pointer put the Pirates ahead 35-24 at the half. Young hit another three in the third quarter that put Phoenix up 45-24 in the fourth quarter.

The Pirates took their largest lead of the game after Hobson sank a pair of free throws that made it 54-37 with 3:11 left in the game.

Phoenix scored 16 points off of Cottage Grove turnovers.

Cottage Grove last went to the tournament in 2009, but lost in the quarterfinals. The Lions defeated Mazama to advance this season.

The Pirates defeated defending champion Central in the quarterfinals, then beat Roosevelt to advance.
