Bandon's Tsunami Day

Unlike the tragedy in Japan, our little town fared very well this morning while the Tsunami continued its path toward coastlines up and down North America. While the waves were indeed high this morning, it just didn't seem like the predicted 6 foot rise in sea level ever appeared on our shore around the 0700 ETA that was forecasted. Perhaps the local cobbler's son standing next to me said it best when this rolled off his innocent tongue, "Is this the Tsunami, Dad?" And I never made it back in the hours which followed to check on the ensuing wave actions that are normally higher than the initial ones.

So unlike so many unfortunate souls in Japan, we were blessed with the good fortune of escaping any damage. Lucky, I suppose, too, were the usual batch of loons (not to be confused with the seabird!) in the way of thrill seekers who continue to push the envelope by insisting on seeing what's happening up close and personal like those in one of the enclosed photos shown out on our South Jetty. They were lucky this time unlike the person in Crescent City who was swept out to sea by getting too close to the waves.

As I went into town later on for a few more painting supplies and a fresh batch of bananas, the town was abuzz with the talk of our Tsunami sirens by many tired folks who never slept a wink past 0300 when these started and repeated with their high pitched whine followed by a short warning message to evacuate to higher ground. We are amongst those zombies who didn't get much sleep with one of those towers a mere 100 yards from us, but likewise we are so glad the warning system works like a fine clock. Hey, there goes the "All Clear" signal with the words "The Tsunami Warning Has Been Lifted."

BTW, this may be a Bandon record as already the schools have been closed twice this year, once for a snow day and now a Tsunami warning, all within the last 30 days!
